Milwaukee Center for Leadership Development’s youth leader, Harvey Buckner if elected governor of Badger Boys State 2012 Session

June 23, 2012

Harvey Buckner, a 2012 graduate of the Milwaukee Center for Leadership Development’s (MCLD) Executive Youth Leadership program, was elected governor, this past Thursday, June 14, 2012 of the Badger Boys State 2012 session. Badger Boys State is held at Ripon College and is a youth leadership program that is designed to provide hands-on training and discussion to high school students to build lifelong leadership skills and help them gain an understanding of American government.

Harvey is a senior at Shorewood High School and desires to work in politics, perhaps as an elected official. He wants to make a positive impact on his community and is working for change now. He was referred to the Milwaukee Center for Leadership Development by his principal at Shorewood High School, Tom Joynt. “While I have always been a bit outspoken, public speaking was not my thing.

Having to speak publicly at every MCLD session, helped me develop my speaking skills,” says Harvey. “I also gained quite a bit of confidence as I began to set goals and plan for my future success.”

Through the youth leadership program of the MCLD, Harvey was paired with his current mentor, State Representative Jason Fields who is also the chairman of the MCLD Board of Directors. “This young man is part of a much needed succession plan for the leadership of Milwaukee,” stated Jason Fields. “The progress that is made today cannot be sustained unless we prepare our young people to lead tomorrow.”

Harvey’s parents, Greg Perry and Chrystal Lester, have been very supportive of their son’s endeavors and appreciate the support of the community and the MCLD.”He is doing such a great job and I thank you for pointing him in the right direction through the MCLD program,” says Mr. Perry. Ms. Tamiko Jordan-Obregon, the executive director of the MCLD says, “To Mr. Perry and all of the parents of the MCLD, it is a pleasure and an honor to be able to serve you and your children. We are in this together and real change will not happen unless we address the needs of our children.”
