Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy, recently launched a free Appliance Recycling Program to help Wisconsin residents save money and reduce energy consumption.
The program provides a $30 incentive and free removal and recycling of old refrigerators and freezers, which can require up to three times more electricity to operate than models built to current efficiency standards. Once removed, customers can look forward to up to $150 in annual energy savings.
“Using outdated refrigerators and freezers can be costly,” said Focus on Energy representative Bill Abolt. “Choosing to unplug and recycle an old, inefficient unit saves energy, money and natural resources.”
Milwaukee resident James Zorn recently participated in the Appliance Recycling Program. Focus on Energy representatives arrived at his home on June 20 to remove an old refrigerator that he no longer needed. “When I realized how much it was costing me to chill those leftovers in my spare fridge, I jumped at the chance to have it hauled away for free and receive a $30 reward,” said Zorn.
Wisconsin customers of Focus on Energy participating utilities can schedule a free pickup by calling 1-855-398-5226 or visiting focusonenergy.com/appliance. Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order with an inside measurement between 10 and 30 cubic feet. In addition, there must be a clear path for removal. A maximum of two units per house hold per calendar year will be accepted.
