Fathers connect to resources through barbershops

June 23, 2012

Gaulien Smith of Gee’s Clipped cuts a father’s hair while discussing fatherhood during President Obama’s Fatherhood Buzz day.

Milwaukee area fathers were able to learn about valuable resources through a tradition form of social media… the barbershop during this past Father’s Day Weekend.

Saturday is traditionally a day when many men head to the barbershops for a trim as well as conversation on issues in the community.

Tony Garnica of Taso’s Hair Studio poses with Felipe Ortiz and his daughter Christina on President Obama’s Fatherhood Buzz day.

President Barack Obama’s Fatherhood Initiative created the Fatherhood Buzz to be held in barbershops in eight cities across the country to disseminate information about responsible fatherhood and parenting. Milwaukee was one of those cities.

Nine barbershops across Milwaukee participated in the White House sponsored Fatherhood Buzz event that involved local partners who provide fatherhood support programs.

Ceree Huley of the Original Hair King marks President Obama’s Fatherhood Buzz by talking with a customer.

Those partners included the Social Development Commission, the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative, Compel, Center for Self Sufficiency, the Milwaukee County Department of Child Support Enforcement, and the Milwaukee Brewers. Those partners spent the day at the barbershops to talk with men and provide them information on both local and national fatherhood resources.
