Time is right to apply for Energy Assistance

December 10, 2011

Don’t want to wait in line? Now is the time to apply for Energy Assistance! Income eligible residents are encouraged to apply for help with their energy bills. You do not have to be behind on your energy bill to apply for Energy Assistance.

Historically, there is a heavy demand for the program in early fall and then again in the spring. This is when the moratorium cut-off for utility services is lifted by the Public Service Commission and services can be disconnected by We Energies.

Sandra White, Energy Assistance Program Manager at the Social Development Commission (SDC), notes that some residents who are behind in their utility payments tend to wait until the last minute to apply for assistance. She urges them to come now to one of the three Energy Assistance sites, rather than later. Applications for Energy Assistance are accepted at the following locations; 4041 N. Richards Street, 2701 S. Chase Street suite D and 6848 N. Teutonia Avenue. All sites are open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm except on holidays.

For more information on the site locations, hours of operation and what documents you need to bring, call the Energy Assistance Hotline at 414- 906-2800. For home visits, residents can call Community Advocates at 414-875-2009.
