On a usual work day, this group of engineers is working hard at Johnson Controls to design and refine the batteries that power hybrid cars and trucks. But they took an afternoon away from work to labor on behalf of preschool children at a Head Start school.
The nine volunteers from Johnson Controls Power Solutions Division in Glendale took park in the 2011 United Ways Day of Caring. The day was coordinated by the United Way of Greater Milwaukee as a service day to help the community. The men and women volunteers spent the day painting and decorating the playground at a Head Start site at 606 W. Concordia. That school is operated by the Social Development Commission and serves 180 preschool students.
The volunteers from Johnson Controls spent the afternoon turning the school playground into a road for students’ tricycles, painting dinosaur and bear tracks, and turning a building’s wall into a giant chalk blackboard. The fruit of all the work brought a sense of satisfaction on the part of the volunteer workers and has prompted many smiles on the faces of the young children at the Head Start school as they enjoy the new playground.
