The NAACP’s Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is coming to Milwaukee

March 19, 2011

Area high school students are encouraged to participate in the annual Afro-American, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), competition sponsored by the Milwaukee Chapter of the NAACP. The competition will be held on Saturday, April 9, from 1:00pm until 5:00pm, at Milwaukee High School of the Arts, 2300 W. Highland Ave.

“ACT-SO is a shining example of the great potential embedded in our youth. The competition recruits, encourages, and stimulates high academic and cultural achievement among African American high school students. It is more important that we as a community, support this activity, particularly here in Milwaukee , where such achievement is not often on display,” said James Hall, Milwaukee ’s NAACP president.

ACT-SO includes 26 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts. Components of this program include a local, city-wide competition, mentoring of local first place winners, and their subsequent participation at the national competition during the annual NAACP convention in Los Angeles this July.

To participate, students must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be of African American descent
  • Must be a high school student enrolled in grades 9-12
  • Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States
  • Must be of amateur status –never having performed as a professional in any categories of the competition

Applications are due, Friday, March 25 by 5:00pm, and can be picked up at the NAACP Milwaukee Branch Offices.
