Event to highlight higher education options, financial aid resources and alternatives to college
Despite the current economy, the price tag for college tuition continues to rise; forcing many Milwaukee parents and students to make some tough decisions about life after high school. The Fresh Coast Classic College and Resource Fair, taking place Friday, November 26, will provide Milwaukee-area parents and students with a wealth of helpful information about posthigh school options including traditional four-year colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as military options and community colleges. In addition, the event will provide a number of helpful workshops to assist parents and students as they navigate through this critical decision-making process.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Rex Athletic Center, 8800 W. Bluemound Road.
“We realize that parents are faced with some tough decisions regarding their children’s education and that is why our college and resource fair is key part of the Fresh Coast Classic,” said Harold Scott, Chairman of the Fresh Coast Classic. “Our organization values education. That’s one of the reasons we give scholarships to students every year.”
Sixty-five percent of parents will pay for their child’s college education differently because of the economic events of the past two years, according to a recent survey conducted by college admissions service Applywise.com and media company NextStepU. The survey also found that 22 percent of parents haven’t saved at all for their child’s education.
“We are expecting a great turnout at the college and resource fair because we are providing parents and students with direct access to college representatives, financial aid information and helpful workshops,” Scott explained. “In addition, the first 300 attendees at the college and resource fair will receive free admission to Friday’s basketball games, courtesy of Fresh Coast Classic.”
Scheduled to take place in Milwaukee at Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Rex Athletic Center, 8800 W. Bluemound Road, November 26-27, the Fresh Coast Classic is far more than a basketball game; it’s an unforgettable experience that brings the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to Milwaukee. Traditionally, the Fresh Coast Classic has been an HBCU Classic, but this year’s event will expand to include eight area high school games where a Milwaukee City Conference school will be paired against a Milwaukee area suburban school, through a new partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools.
