Dr. Lester L. Carter, Jr. owner of Carter’s Drugs located on N. 24th and Burleigh Street was honored on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 with The James Baker Award presented to him by the Community Brainstorming Conference at a dinner. Dr. Carter has operated his pharmacy since the late 1960’s from the same location. He was honored in recognition for providing health services and care in the community. The conference was established 25 years ago as a public forum for issues affecting the Black community. The Baker award, which recognizes public service, was established to honor the late draftsman and engineer for the City of Milwaukee who was one of the founders of the conference. He died in 1990. Previous recipients of the award have included civil rights activist James Cameron, attorney John Daniels, former NAACP President Felmers Chaney and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), among others.
