Candidate Spotlight – Sherman Hill, seeks 10th Assembly District seat

September 11, 2010

Sherman L. Hill

Sherman L. Hill, a resident of the 10th district for more than 30 years has thrown his hat in the race for State Representative in the 10th Assembly District. Hill says that he made the decision after being encouraged by many residents in the Harambee Neighborhood, where he also resides.

Hill says that he was disappointed that State Representative Annette Polly Williams announced her retirement several months ago. He says that if he felt another candidate was in the race that he could support then he would have, but he says that is not the case.

His concerns and issues address quality care for seniors, access to quality education, quality medical care for the homeless and mentally ill, nurturing programs for young parents, neighborhood development/renewal/safety, programs for veterans, assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure, training for jobs/employment, support urban agriculture as a community industry and working to provide access to quality youth programs.

Hill is retired, and says that he doesn’t have a financial motive in seeking the position. He says that one of his main focuses is to find a common ground and work with the young residents as well as the older ones. He wants to institute regular meetings with groups in the district that represent the different ages and different needs. He wants to create this groups separately and meet with them separately and together. He says that he would go into his own pocket to make this happen on a regular basis. He says that many times the voices of young people don’t get heard, and he wants to engage this segment of the community that often gets written off.
