Dorothy Buckhanan-Wilson, vice-president of Mission Services for Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, was recently elected International First Vice-President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at its recent national convention in St. Louis, Missouri. Ms. Buckhanan-Wilson is currently an active member of Upsilon Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the nation’s oldest sorority for college trained women of color. Established in 1908 on the campus of Howard University , the sorority has a membership of 260,000 women in 950 chapters in the U.S. and abroad.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national program theme for the next four years, under the leadership of incoming President Carolyn House Stewart is “Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.” Members will be engaged in activities like the Emerging Young Leaders Initiative, Health Initiatives, Global Poverty, Economic Security Initiative, Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative and Internal Leadership Training for External Service Initiative.
As National First Vice President, Buckhanan-Wilson will be responsible for helping President Stewart carry forth the sorority’s national program and implement other initiatives as requested. Further, she will spend time preparing to assume the role of National President of the organization in 2014.
Buckhanan-Wilson has served Alpha Kappa Alpha on the local, regional, and national levels including chapter organizer, chapter president, Dorothy Buckhanan-Wilson cluster coordinator, national committee member, regional director, and national recording secretary.
In addition to AKA, Buckhanan- Wilson is involved with other service organizations including The Milwaukee Chapter of Links, Inc., Professional Dimensions, The National Black MBA Association and Top Ladies of Distinction Inc., where she has served as National 1st Vice President, National 2nd Vice President, National Recording Secretary, National Area Director, and two stints as President of the award winning Milwaukee Chapter. She is mother of two teenage children—a Spelman College Freshman and a Homestead High School Senior.
Buckhanan-Wilson’s successful National First Vice President Campaign was chaired by Catherine Miles, retired MPS administrator and Deidra Edwards (chapter member), with assistance from members of the local chapter – Upsilon Mu Omega and regional coordinators from across the country.
