Spencer Coggs endorsed by Wisconsin Teamsters

May 15, 2010

Working families join Coggs Campaign

Senator Spencer Coggs

State Senator Spencer Coggs announced an additional key endorsement in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor.

“I am proud to receive the endorsement of the Teamsters,” said Coggs. “Working families are the life blood of Wisconsin and are the key to growing the economic engine of our state.”

The Wisconsin Teamsters Joint Council 39 is comprised of five local unions throughout Wisconsin representing over 40,000 active and retired Teamsters from both the public and private sectors.

“As a former Union Steward from AFSCME, Spencer Coggs knows firsthand the many issues that affect labor,” said Fred Gegare, President, Wisconsin Teamsters Joint Council 39. “During his tenure as a State Legislator, he has never forgotten where he came from and has proven himself an advocate for labor issues.”

Senator Coggs is the author of SB 585, the Workers Freedom Act which will be signed by the Governor this week. The Workers Freedom Act prevents workers from being a captive audience and being forced to participate in non-work related anti-union discussions on company time. Spencer Coggs also cosponsored SB 46, which was signed last summer and requires municipalities to honor the terms of current contracts during negotiations of new contracts.

As Lt Governor, Spencer Coggs would focus on jobs and economic growth in Wisconsin, mainly through providing the tools for small businesses to expand. In addition, Spencer Coggs as the Lt. Governor would act as a liaison between the Governor and the Legislature. Spencer Coggs says that his primary responsibility is to ensure Tom Barrett is elected Governor of Wisconsin in November. “I am pleased to add the Teamsters to my campaign team,” concluded Coggs.

Senator Spencer Coggs has been in the Wisconsin Legislature for 28 years. Getting his first taste of politics during the civil rights era, Spencer Coggs served as a Union Steward for AFSCME Local 1091. He is a former member of the Joint Committee on Finance and is currently the Chair of Labor, Elections, and Urban Affairs. In the Wisconsin Legislature, Spencer Coggs has continued to advocate for working families and brings a strong personal and professional background of progressive and labor issues to the race.
