MPS Summer School enrollment is now open

May 1, 2010

Priority registration ends June 4, 2010

Registration for MPS Summer School is now open for Milwaukee’s school-aged children. Families can choose from any of 75 elementary, K-8 and middle school programs, all of them focused on reading and math. “We know that particularly at the grade four level, children must improve their reading skills,” said Sandra Schroeder, Director of the MPS Summer School program. “Our programs offer students the chance to improve some skills, while keeping other skills sharp throughout the summer months.”

The summer curriculum was designed to teach literacy skills through science (earth, life and physical science) in a 90-minute block format. These lessons incorporate literature along with nonfiction reading and “thinkalouds”. Teachers use science experiments and demonstrations, leveled science readers, Reading A-Z, Science A-Z, RAZ-kids, Discovery Streaming Education, and Kidspiration. Lessons are aligned to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Summer sites were provided science kits to support the hands-on science projects such as butterfly releases.

Students also participate in a 90-minute math block. The summer K-8 mathematics curriculum focuses on Learning Targets and State Descriptors that were identified as areas of need. Students are engaged in meaningful mathematics that promotes communication and reasoning. “We work the brain, but we feed the body too,” said Schroeder. “Breakfast and lunch are served at most sites. Selected sites also serve dinner.”

Summer learning opportunities are extended to high school students as well. There are eleven high school sites offering credit recovery programs. An additional three locations will provide services to children whose attendance is court-ordered. All tolled, MPS operates 92 Summer School sites in an effort to provide educational support for children. Most programs run approximately five weeks, with instruction in the mornings, followed by lunch.

Parents can register their children for summer programs at any MPS school. They may also register at MPS Central Services, 5225 W. Vliet Street, Room 133.

Priority registration runs through June 4. Late high school walk-in registration is June 24 and 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at each high school Summer School site.
