NMSBank celebrates and honors its co-founders for 40th year

April 10, 2010

As North Milwaukee State Bank (NMSBank) approaches its 40th year, the staff has launched the “Founders Campaign” to honor two board members who have been with the bank since its inception.

Throughout the month of April, NMSBank will feature a tribute to its co-founder Dr. Randle E. Pollard and to his 38 year career as a urologist. NMSBank will provide free health screenings to its customers and highlight its savings account product special in relation to honoring Dr. Pollard during April. The bank has lowered the initial minimum deposit for a savings account from $100.00 to $50.00.

NMSBank has pledged to help fight against breast cancer, as they participate in the ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Week on May 1, 2010 at Discovery World. It is important for the bank to reach out and help heal the community as its co-founders have done throughout their lives. On May 15, 2010 at 9:00 am at Holy Redeemer Church, The Links, Inc. will host a Scholarship Awards Breakfast Meeting, NMSBank co-founder Dr. Williams Finlayson will be the guest speaker.

Dr. Finlayson and Dr. Pollard have distinguished themselves through both medical service to the inner city of Milwaukee and as respected, community leaders. They actively supported efforts to promote racial justice during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. However, their vision went beyond the traditional sphere of civil rights concerns.

It was clear that the segregation that kept Blacks out of certain neighborhoods or jobs also affected the access to financial resources. They realized that there was great need for increased financial literacy among minorities and even more importantly, financial empowerment. With that in mind, these two joined with other visionary thinkers to establish the first, full-service, minority owned bank in Wisconsin.

NMSBank, which opened its doors on Feb. 12, 1971, was the result. After nearly 40 years of operation, the institution remains a source of pride for both Pollard and Finlayson. Pollard, a decorated World War II veteran, is a dedicated family man and healer. He considers the bank to be an important part of his legacy, one that will have an impact on future generations.

Board Chairman Emeritus Finlayson is also passionate about his association with the institution. He is proud of having broken down racial barriers within local hospitals and the medical profession in general. He views his efforts to establish and nurture the bank to be of equal significance.

During its Founders’ Campaign, NMSBank will feature advertisements, a number of events, and special promotions on bank products and services throughout the next few months.
