Candidates for SDC Election

March 27, 2010

Four candidates will be on the ballot for the April election of the Social Development Commission (SDC) Board. Elections will be held in the six districts that make up Milwaukee County for the anti-poverty agency’s Board of Commissioners. Each district has a representative on the 18-person SDC board. New members will be elected on Tuesday, April 6.

In District 1, Kristina McHenry turned in the necessary number of valid signatures on her nomination papers. She says if elected as an SDC Board member, she will work to ensure that agency programs reflect the needs of the community.

For District 2, Walter Love will be on the ballot. He points to his experience including service on the boards of the YMCA of Greater Milwaukee and MATC.

In District 3, Gail Winston will be on the ballot. She is an ordained and licensed minister and says people often feel left out of policy making agendas. She pledges to make sure real problems that affect people and children are addressed.

For District 4, Karlton Jones is running for the Board position. He is currently a student at UW-M but has in the past used SDC programs. If elected, he says he will give representation to members of the community who need SDC programs and services.

SDC Board of Commission members help draw up and implement policy for the agency. In addition to the six elected members, the other 12 members of the Board are appointed by a variety of public and private agencies and organizations.

No candidate turned in enough valid signatures for Districts 5 and 6 but write-in candidates are being encouraged to run for those seats as well as in other districts.
