Milwaukee Public Library Calendar of Events December 4-10

Tour the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., with the Friends. Free tours begin at 11 a.m. each Saturday afternoon in the rotunda. Tour goers receive a coupon for a free book at the end of the tour in the Bookseller Store and Café. To arrange for a special tour call (414) 286-TOUR.

SPECIAL AUTHOR EVENTS

Gingerbread Christmas with Jan Brett

Welcome to the world of Jan Brett! Renowned children’s author illustrator Jan Brett will visit Milwaukee as part of her 2016 tour to share her newest book Gingerbread Christmas in Centennial Hall, 733 N. Eighth St., Sunday, December 4, beginning at 10 a.m. Jan’s presentation will be followed by a book signing, a chance to meet Hedgie, Jan’s favorite friend from The Mitten and The Hat, photo opportunities of Jan’s tour bus specially wrapped in artwork from Gingerbread Christmas and more! Books will be available for purchase from Boswell Book Company. The presentation begins at 10 a.m., but plan to stay for more holiday family fun. Please arrive an hour before the signing to see and take photos of the tour bus. Jan will do her very best to sign all of the books that time permits. If time does not permit for signing of every book, special signed bookplates featuring Jan’s artwork will be provided.

Anarchy in Bay View’s Little Italy

Local history writer Anna Passante will perform as Edna Dunlop (1874-1965), the first female assistant city editor of the Milwaukee Journal, at the Tippecanoe Branch, 3912 S. Howell Ave., Monday, December 5, 6-7 p.m. Dunlop will present the book, Anarchy in Bay View’s Little Italy, September 9, 1917, and the Shocking Aftermath authored by Anna Passante. Sponsored by the St. Francis Historical Society.

Pistols and Petticoats: 175 Years of Lady Detectives in Fact and Fiction

Meet Erika Janik, award-winning author, historian, and the executive producer of Wisconsin Life on Wisconsin Public Radio as she tells the story of women’s very early place in crime fiction and their public crusade to transform policing at the East Branch, 2320 N. Cramer St., Tuesday, December 6, 6-7 p.m.

Event planned in partnership with Girls in Tech Milwaukee. For teens ages 13-18.

Murder Mystery Night

Do you enjoy a good murder mystery? Come to our “killer” Murder Mystery Night and you will be part of the action! Each participant will receive a description of their character and will act out a part of the story. Don’t miss this “to die for” event at Central Library, 814 W. Dream Keepers Writing Circle

Calling all young writers ages 9-13. Work on your writing project and share it with other young writers at Capitol Library, 3969 N. 74th St., Tuesday, December 6, 4-5:30 p.m. Students will spend the first part of the session writing, with writing prompts and encouragement from author and writing coach Rochelle Melander. During the second half of the session, students will share these stories with each other, learning how to listen for key story elements and give helpful feedback. Also Dec. 20.

Truck Studio Art Workshop

A drop-in program designed for children in Grades K5-5. Participants will work on imaginative art activities relevant to a book or artistic theme for the day.  Presented by Artists Working in Education, Inc. (A.W.E.).

Str-e-e-tch with reading stories with YogaKids Milwaukee LLC. Work on the balancing, stretching and breathing techniques used in yoga based on the characters read about in a book.

Saturday Afternoon at Central for ‘Tweens

Yoga for Tweens at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Saturday, December 10, 2-3 p.m. Learn fun yoga poses and breath play that help strengthen the body increase focus and concentration, relieve stress, and help you feel great. Led by Stephanie Sandy of YogaConnects.

Preschool Story Time

Preschoolers are invited for fun stories, songs, and finger plays designed to help them develop important

literacy skills needed prior to learning how to read. Child care centers are welcome.
