MPS celebrates Read Across America; media invited to Clarke Street School

MILWAUKEE (March 1, 2016) – Thousands of students in Milwaukee Public Schools will be visited by reading volunteers Wednesday as the district marks Read Across America Day.
Created in 1997, NEA’s Read Across America is a nationwide day to celebrate reading coinciding with the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
MPS’ Read Across America effort – the largest in recent history – will include more than 250 volunteers visiting 75 MPS elementary and middle schools.
As part of the celebration, Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver will read to 4-year-old kindergarten and 5-year-old kindergarten students at MPS’ Clarke Street School.
The event is set to begin with Dr. Driver addressing students at 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 followed by the superintendent reading to students at 8:30 a.m. Media are welcome and invited to attend and to be set up in time, crews should plan to arrive by 8 a.m. at the school, 2816 W. Clarke Street, Milwaukee 53210.
“Reading is the foundation of everything we do for our students every day,” Dr. Driver said. “As MPS focuses on literacy in all subjects and provides more one-on-one and small group reading time, we are grateful for the work community members do to reinforce the value of literacy to our students.”
