Live Broadcast of Official State Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Planned for Monday, January 18 at 12 Noon
The Official State of Wisconsin Tribute and Ceremony Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held on Monday, January 18 at noon in the Capitol Rotunda in Madison. Produced, directed and hosted by WPR’s Dr. Jonathan Overby, host of Higher Ground, this annual event features words and music in celebration of King’s life and legacy.
This year’s theme is “Stand Up, Stand Out -‐ A Call To Community Service,” and the guest speaker is Ms. Aja Brown, mayor of Compton, California. The youngest mayor in the city’s history, Brown has received a number of honors for her youth, women’s rights and socio-‐economic equality work in advocacy. Her vision for Compton includes youth development programs, a small-‐business incubator, farmers markets and a bike-‐sharing program. Energetic, authentic and driven, Mayor Brown is an inspiration for positive community change.
The event will also feature performances by the University of Illinois Black Chorus and Kenosha, Wisconsin’s Tremper High School Band.
The Tribute and Ceremony in the Capitol building is free and open to the public with limited seating. People throughout the state can listen live from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Wisconsin Public Radio and at wpr.org. Wisconsin Public Television’s Wisconsin Channel and wpt.org will also air the program live. A one-‐hour highlights broadcast airs on Wisconsin Public Television at 9 p.m. on the same day.
