Head Start students in Milwaukee received free dental exams Saturday, October 4, at the Marquette Dental School thanks to a cooperative involving Milwaukee Public Schools, Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Greater Milwaukee Dental Association.
The exams included a cleaning, a complimentary toothbrush and fluoride treatments.
In addition to individualized educational experiences, students received a daily breakfast or snack and lunch along with family resources and opportunities for family involvement.
Saturday’s Head Start Dental Day was highly encouraged for those Head Start families whose children have not yet had their dental screening this year.
Dentists are available to provide urgent care as necessary.
Local HMOs were on-site to assist families in locating their assigned dental providers.
MPS Head Start serves more than 1,300 children in the city at 23 sites. Families who took part in the exams were required to meet income eligibility requirements to qualify.
MPS Head Start prepares 3 and 4-year-old children to succeed in school through high-quality half or full-day educational programming as well as supporting families with physical and mental health services, dental care, disability services and social services.
