Peace Action Wisconsin is partnering with the Milwaukee-Carora Sister Cities Committee to lead a delegation of 15 people to Venezuela, January 9-17.
The purpose of this delegation will be to foster a cultural and economic relationship between Milwaukee and her sister city of Carora, Venezuela.
The delegation includes many area students and non-profit workers who wish to participate in the cultural exchange. Mayor Barrett and Caroran Mayor Edgar Carrasco originally signed the Sister City agreement on March 24, 2009.
For nine days the delegation will tour Coro, Carora, Sanare, and Caracas, Venezuela, performing a host of activities ranging from fact-finding to social.
Now five years into Milwaukee’s Sister City agreement with Carora, the delegation will spend four days in that city learning about its renowned participatory democracy, community radio, and urban agriculture programs.
We will also be studying the results of the first municipal elections after Chavez’s passing, held less than a month ago.
To strengthen economic ties and learn from Venezuela’s extraordinarily effective social programs and nonprofit community, the delegation will be meeting with agricultural and coffee cooperatives, other local industries, and officials throughout the trip.
At various stops throughout the tour, the delegation will immerse itself in Venezuelan music and art, including performances by folk musicians and a tour of instrument and craft shops.
