County Parks held its Park Dedication on Saturday, May 4 for James W. Beckum Park at 900 W. Brown St. Milwaukee County Supervisor Willie Johnson, Jr. helped to make the honor become a reality. “The community has benefited immeasurably from the dedication of this man.” Johnson said. The former Negro League player, James Beckum founded the Beckum-Stapleton Little League in 1964 and settled into playing in the original Carver Park. The portion of Carver Park north of Brown Street is now known as James W. Beckum Park. Local community leaders and members of the Beckum-Stapleton Little League teams participated with the ribbon cutting and later Beckum through out the first pitch to open the season for this year’s Little League.
