Dozens of adult men and women are working hard to finish classwork and testing so they can take part in a GED/HSED Graduation later this month.
The participants in the GED/HSED program at the Social Development Commission are completing work so they can participate in Graduation Ceremonies held Friday, May 22nd.
The celebration will be held at 1:00 pm at the National Guard Armory located at 4108 N. Richards Street in Milwaukee.
The graduates will be cheered on by family and friends as they mark a major achievement in their lives.

A new grant from the Families Moving Forward Coalition will help an SDC program help youth and families.
The funding support will assist SDC’s “Exploring Our Creativity- Our Choices Always Matter” project.
This effort will allow the agency’s Youth and Family Development Program (YFDP) to increase awareness of mental health and substance abuse challenges to youth as well as reduce stigma that is attached to it.
A variety of creative methods will help make participating young people more aware of their daily activity choices.

A Weatherization and Lead Hazard Prevention Fair was held at Journey House for neighbors from that Southside area.
It offered demonstrations and workshops on topics such as furnace and water heater maintenance, lighting and energy savings tips, the House as a System, and the dangers of lead poisoning.

The Board of Commissioners for the Social Development Commission (SDC) has a pair of new faces on it.
Two new members of the 18-person Board were sworn in prior to the October Board meeting.
Dr. Gary Williams was sworn in as the new Board representative for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee while Dr. Demond Means was formally added as the SDC District One Board rep.
The two have joined the body that draws up and helps implement policy at the anti-poverty agency.

A low-income community representative will be selected in a Special Election September 13th for the Social Development Commission (SDC) Board of Commissioners.
The Special SDC Board Election will be held for the agency’s District One. That district includes Milwaukee’s Northwest side plus Milwaukee County’s northern and western suburban communities.
The election will fill the seat on the 18 person SDC Board previously held by Kristina McHenry. Ms. McHenry recently stepped down from the Board when she took a position on the staff of Senator Ron Johnson.

Milwaukee County households who are faced with utility disconnection have options when seeking to reestablish power to provide some relief from the heat wave plaguing the area.
The Social Development Commission (SDC) reminds residents who have been disconnected or face disconnection of their electricity can apply for Energy Assistance Crisis funding.
There are still Crisis funds available for households at SDC sites located at 4041 N. Richards Street, 2701 S. Chase Avenue, and 6848 N. Teutonia Avenue.

A new report “Wisconsin’s Mass Incarceration of African American Males: Workforce, Community & Nonprofit Challenges” by John Pawasarat and Dr. Lois Quinn of UWM will be the focus of a workshop organized by the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee.

The Social Development Commission (SDC) announces participation again in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in Milwaukee. Through its Food Service Program, SDC prepares and delivers meals that feed school age children during the summer months. SDC Interim CEO Hannah C. Dugan says “SDC Food Service made more than 68,000 meals last summer that kept children fed and healthy. Seniors may be eligible for benefits that can help them live independently in their retirement. But knowing what they are eligible for and how to access it can be a challenge.
The Social Development Commission offers the Senior Benefit Enrollment Service to help seniors whose gross monthly income is below $2,027 (or $2,650 for couples) to enroll them for benefits to which they are entitled.
These benefit programs can include the Medicare Savings Program, Medicare Extra Help Part D, Medicaid, Energy Assistance, and Wisconsin Food Share.

Volunteers from the Social Development Commission’s (SDC) Residential Services Program stepped forward to help an elderly homeowner. They took part in the Rebuilding Together Greater Milwaukee 2013 Rebuilding Day.
