This past Monday, just before dusk, a group of community members stood in Clark Street School’s crowded playground. Attendees of all ages stood shoulder to shoulder. Some held a pink balloon in one hand.
Although balloons may usually symbolize a celebration to these Milwaukee residents, this time, they meant something far more solemn.
These balloons represented a young girl’s life cut short by the unsparing temper of a bullet, fired on a playground in the light of day.

Milwaukee Police are investigating the shooting of an 11-year-old girl that happened on the playground of Clarke Street School located at 28th and Clarke Streets shortly before 7 p.m. on May 21.
Preliminary information suggests that two individuals were shooting at each other when the child was caught in the crossfire and shot.
The child was conveyed to Children’s Hospital where she in undergoing treatment for serious injuries.
There are no suspects in custody and we ask that anyone with information call Milwaukee Police at 414- 935-7360.

‘Warm Smiles for Kids’ Program accepting donations through January 31st
Students from two of Milwaukee Public Schools’ elementary schools will have winter clothing items to help keep them warm this winter, thanks to a donation from the AT&T Pioneers.
The AT&T Pioneers have donated 535 winter children’s items, including hats, scarves, gloves, coats, snow pants, shirts and socks for students at Clarke Street School and Benjamin Franklin School in Milwaukee.
The Pioneers have collected winter clothes for Wisconsin students through their annual “Warm Smiles for Kids” program since 2008.
