Community-wide 2010 Charity Basketball Tournament brings communities & cultures together

In an effort to bring families, cultures and communities together from across Milwaukee, a positive community event will take place Aug. 14, Noon-5 p.m. at Lincoln Park. The “Thomas R. Harris Community-Wide 2010 Charity Basketball Tournament” is a one-day event featuring a 5-on-5 basketball tournament between eight teams; Milwaukee- area vendors; collegiate basketball players; and family, fun and entertainment.
The winning team of the event will receive a cash prize of $1000, and the remaining proceeds will be donated to the Sisters Network, a national African American breast cancer survivorship organization.

National touring cast of WICKED will contribute special Milwaukee performance to fight AIDS

On Monday, August 2, the National Touring Company of ‘WICKED’ will host ‘Witches’ Night Off’, an evening of adult cabaret performances featuring cast and crew members of the company. Net proceeds of the event will benefit the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin.
The performance will be the cast’s gift to ARCW, which this year is marking its 25th anniversary in the fight against AIDS. ARCW is home to the ARCW Medical Center, Wisconsin’s largest provider of HIV medical, dental and mental health care.

25th Anniversary Black & White Ball raises $373,000 for Milwaukee Urban League

The Milwaukee Urban League’s 25th Anniversary Black & White Ball was a silver anniversary celebration to remember. Nearly 850 guests commemorated the milestone and helped raise $200,000 for the League, including $17,000 from a special appeal to purchase backpacks and school supplies to be distributed to needy children at the League’s 2010 health and back-to-school resource fair. The Ball was also the setting for special presentations by four area companies and foundations which provided another $173,000 in donations for a variety of League programs.

BloodCenter of Wisconsin grows to become first and only blood, marrow, organ and tissue provider in the country

BloodCenter of Wisconsin is the new home of Wisconsin Donor Network and Wisconsin Tissue Bank, making it the first and only organization in the United States to specialize in all four types of donation: blood, marrow, tissue and organs.
BloodCenter of Wisconsin has also advanced into clinical research and treatments through its newly established Medical Sciences Institute. The Medical Sciences Institute will conduct clinical research in hematology, sickle cell anemia and bleeding and clotting disorders. Eventually, it will conduct clinical trials with patients in these areas.
