Business development program recruits for new class
A program that helps refugees seeking to start up their own home childcare business is recruiting for its next class.
The SDC Refugee Childcare Microenterprise Development Project is beginning signup for its next class. The program is designed to train refugees and asylees (persons who have been granted asylum) to become state certified home-based family childcare providers.
Classroom sessions are designed to help participants develop a business plan, become certified, and set up operations as a childcare provider.
The program is a partnership of the Social Development Commission (SDC), the Pan African Community Association (PACA), and the Multicultural Entrepreneurial Institute (MEI). It is funded by the federal Administration for Children and Families Office of Refugee Resettlement.
Signup for the next session begins October 1 with the classes scheduled to start in January.
To be eligible for the program, a person needs to have refugee or asylee status, a basic competency in the English language, an appropriate space to operate a home-based childcare business or willingness to move, an ability to attend evening course sessions, and the ability to work on a business plan.
The most recent class sessions helped a group of refugee women and men from Iraq, Ethiopia and Eritrea gain the knowledge and receive assistance they need to start and to successfully operate their own businesses.
