MPS debuts online schools catalog as enrollment is underway

16 February 2013

District offers city’s greatest variety of high-quality schools – and programs exclusive to MPS

Milwaukee Public Schools – which offers the city’s greatest variety of high-quality schools and a number of programs parents won’t find anywhere else in the city – is debuting School Selections, its new online schools catalog. The announcement comes as the enrollment process for 2013-14 is underway.

The new online catalog – at mpsmke.com/EnrollMPS – allows prospective families to find the right program for their children by location, by grade level and by specialty or program. Each school’s page contains information about the specific curriculum and programs, specialty courses, start/end times, before/after school programs, clubs, sports and a photo collage. And a new, improved online enrollment form is easier to use.

The Three-Choice Enrollment process is for families who are new to MPS or those who are selecting a new school for the upcoming 2013-14 school year. Families who use the process have the best opportunity to receive a seat in their first-choice school. The Three-Choice period ends February 22.

If a school receives more applications than it has seats, a random selection process will take place that gives all who applied during Three-Choice an equal opportunity. After Three-Choice, enrollment continues on a first-come, first-served basis.

Interested families can find the right school for their children and enroll online at mpsmke.com/EnrollMPS – or they can enroll at any MPS school or MPS District Parent Resource Center. Parent Resource Centers are located at Audubon, Morse Marshall, North Division, South Division and Washington.

The enrollment process begins as state test scores results showed that most MPS schools graded in new report cards are growing achievement better than or roughly as well as the state as a whole. And MPS’ graduation rate is now 17 points higher than it was for the class of 2000.

Milwaukee Public Schools has been and continues to be committed to working tirelessly to improve student achievement. The district continues the implementation of strong curriculum in all neighborhood and specialty schools – curriculum tied to the rigorous Common Core State Standards which prepare students to succeed in college and careers.

MPS is also home to the nation’s largest concentration of students participating in the rigorous pre-engineering Project Lead the Way program; the nation’s largest number of public Montessori schools; and exclusive Learning Journeys that connect students and their curriculum to the region’s best community learning opportunities including Discovery World, Junior Achievement Kohl’s Education Center and the Milwaukee Public Museum.

MPS has made a significant investment in specialist-taught art, music and physical education with a plan to increase that investment further in the coming year. The support of the GE Foundation has led to the development of schools that will be used as models for college and career readiness across the district.

MPS has successfully implemented PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), which reinforces positive behavior and promotes a healthy school climate — and we have extensive safety protocols that continue to make our schools a safe place for students. An AlertNow system allows the district to communicate important messages and updates to every MPS family within 45 minutes.

If you’re interested in finding more about your neighborhood school, an MPS specialty school or what the district has to offer, you can visit the new online catalog: mpsmke.com/EnrollMPS, visit any MPS school or visit an MPS District Parent Resource Center at Audubon, Morse Marshall, North Division, South Division and Washington.
